This website was developed for anyone interested in learning more about the Sigma Chi Fraternity at Western Connecticut State University. Sigma Chi is one of the largest and oldest all-male, college, Greek-letter social fraternities and secret societies. The fraternity was founded on June 28, 1855 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Sigma Chi’s fundamental purpose is to promote the concepts of Friendship, Justice, and Learning. Sigma Chi’s vision statement is “to become the preeminent collegiate leadership development organization—aligned, focused, and living our core values. Sigma Chi’s mission is to develop value-based leaders committed to the betterment of character, campus, and community.
Sigma Chi understands that a positive college experience brings individual friendships that will last a lifetime. The Sigma Chi Fraternity brings together individuals with different temperaments, talents, and convictions to assist one another in “the attainment of high-minded goals—a friendship of a higher order that we call brotherhood.”
In addition to cultivating and maintaining lifelong friendships, Sigma Chi believes “integrity, sound judgment, and loyalty are all lofty goals which sometimes find themselves contradictory to the impulses of collegiate life.” The Sigma Chi Fraternity offers undergraduate brothers several character development programs and workshops that assists them to define themselves as men of good character, students of fair ability, with ambitious purposes, a congenial disposition, possessed of good morals, having a high sense of honor, and a deep sense of personal responsibility.
Further, the Sigma Chi Fraternity provides its undergraduate brothers with opportunities to focus on and develop an appreciation for lifelong learning to “gain knowledge, wisdom, and character.” The Sigma Chi Fraternity recognizes brothers with exceptional academic successes by rewarding these brothers through scholarships and grants nearly totaling the amount of $2.5 million thanks to the generosity of the Sigma Chi Foundation.
There are several Sigma Chi's who have contributed a great deal to the fraternity beyond their undergraduate years and have gained media attention. Some Significant Sigs include:
